Description from the seller
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist at home and abroad. His works are included in diverse renowned art collections and he was the first Dutch artist to be elected as Official Olympic Artist for the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind the works of Clemens Briels lies always a story; his artworks are small anecdotes from an opposite society. Briels developed his own style, Antipodism: he imagines the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with a different, imaginative view of everyday things and is often surprised as a result.
Briels imagines his experiences, which he has gained in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue and the souk, the musical tones drizzled with a light erotic sauce, push him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels’ artworks are never bound to time and convey universal themes, cosmopolitan visions of daily life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist provokes the viewer’s imagination by showing images different from what we are supposed to see. Because stereotypes are, after all, learned by us and not imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer is confronted with surprises.
Dimensions of the work with frame: 62 x 56 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 33 x 29 cm
Viewing is of course possible. Additionally we have our own in-house framery, celebrating its 85th anniversary year. We also make use of restorers from the professional association: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you would like to make use of this, of course we would be happy to hear from you.
