Description from the seller
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both at home and abroad. His artworks are included in various renowned art collections and he was elected as the first Dutch artist to be named Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind the artworks of Clemens Briels lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from a counter-society. Clemens Briels developed his own style, ANTIPODISME: he imagines rather the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with another, imaginative view of everyday things and is often surprised as a result.
Briels portrays experiences he has gained in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music provides an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue and the souk, music tones draped with a light erotic sauce, compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels’s artworks are never bound by time and reflect universal themes, cosmopolitan visions of everyday life. Clemens Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer’s imagination by showing different images than we are expected to see. Because stereotypes are simply learned and not imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer is confronted with surprises.
