Pier Paolo Pasolini, photographs by Dino Pedriali, published in Rome by Johan & Levi editors in the first Italian edition, hardcover, 200 pages, original language and signed.
Description from the seller
Exceptionally rare copy, dedicated and signed in three colors on the title page by Dino Pedriali (1950 - 2021), unique and unavailable on the Internet even in unsigned copies (do not confuse with the 2022 reprint). 128 pages and 78 black-and-white photographs full-page or double-page. Sturdy publisher's hardcover illustrated on the cover and back cover. In excellent condition.
This volume pays photographic homage to the poet, novelist and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), whose centenary of birth was commemorated in 2022. The 78 images gathered in this volume constitute the visual testimony that Pier Paolo Pasolini entrusted to the lens of Dino Pedriali in late October 1975. These are his last photographs, which the poet never saw: their meeting was planned for November 2, a few days later, the exact day on which Pasolini's lifeless body was found on the Ostia beach. Pedriali was 25 years old and had already collaborated with Man Ray when Pasolini entrusted him with the mission to shoot, in two two-day sessions, a photographic reportage between his homes in Chia and Sabaudia. The shots show him wandering alone in the streets, near his famous Alfa Romeo, black glasses and a denim shirt on his nose. Then, in the deepest intimacy, while he draws, reads, and writes with his Olivetti 22: on the table, the more than 600 pages of typescript of the unfinished novel Petrolio, which Pasolini had wanted to complete with these same images and in which he stated he wanted to immerse himself body and soul, as much as through his words. Finally, the nudes, shot outside the house in a game of surprise and apparent unconsciousness, a pact between the photographer and his subject for them to seem “stolen.” Like images taken from a Pasolinian film—where black and white becomes an expressive model—these photos give rise to an intense sequence, at once studied and natural. With this book, Pedriali restores the poet’s body to history, as Pasolini had entrusted to him. An unprecedented and poignant journey that becomes a public and shared heritage, the ultimate testimony of Pasolini’s legacy and the artistic value of Dino Pedriali.
Dino Pedriali (born 1950) is considered the Caravaggio of photography and has published various books on male nudes as well as volumes of photographic homage to Man Ray and especially to Andy Warhol.
