Original work by Jan Cremer. In honor of his exhibition: Jan Cremer as a painter (The Hague period 1958-1962) at Galerie Nouvelles Images in The Hague.

Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, leaving his upbringing entirely to his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war Jan Cremer was placed by child protection in foster families and colony houses. In the fifties he held various jobs, served with the marines, and spent some time as a sailor on the high seas. In 1958 he briefly attended a program at the art academy in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a time on Ibiza and moved to New York in 1964. Afterwards he alternated between America and Europe. As a writer Cremer gained instant fame with “Ik Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result, the literary merit of his authorship was not regarded as very high by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. “Ik Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and theatrical works. Jan Cremer's art consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often depicts Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in bold colors."
