Description from the seller
Antique Ex Voto Figures – Child, Woman & Swaddled Infant – Silver-plated Metal – 19th / Early 20th Century.
Rare and expressive group of three figurative Ex Voto offerings in silver-plated metal, portraying a child, a woman, and a swaddled infant.
This type of votive offering was traditionally sacrificed in churches in Catholic regions of Europe (notably Italy, Spain, and France) as a sign of gratitude, a plea, or healing. The figurative depictions often relate directly to personal fortunes – for example illness, birth, or the protection of family members.
The pieces offered here are characterized by their fine stamping/embossing, detailed facial features, and decorative ornamentation. In particular the swaddled infant with a star motif possesses exceptional presence and collector’s quality.
The developed patina, with sometimes iridescent discolorations, reinforces the authenticity and lends the objects a unique, almost sculptural character.
Such figurative Ex Votos are today coveted as collectibles and are increasingly valued as aesthetic objects in interior design or in art and Wunderkammern (cabinets of curiosities).
