The VT 859 series belongs to a group of diesel railcars from VT 851 through VT 871 and were built by the wagon factory Wismar.
The railcars operated in the vicinity of Stuttgart and Munich, later they were also deployed in Schwerin (Mecklenburg) and remained in service with the Reichsbahn until 1940. During World War II they were used for war purposes.
