De Vlasspinner, an original oil painting by Bernard Pothast (1882–1966) from 1910–1920, signed by the artist, Dutch origin, 85 × 65 cm, depicting an interior scene with a man spinning flax, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Restored; retouched face, cleaned and re-varnished, this fantastic painting (45 x 55 cm) by Bernard Jean Corneille Pothast (born 1882 in Halle, Belgium - 1966 in Laren, Netherlands).
Bernard is considered part of the second generation of the Laren School and is best known for the romantic-impressionist peasant interiors in which mothers with their children are depicted.
Here we see a rare image of a man spinning flax.
Bernard Pothast moved to Laren around 1912 and temporarily lived in the "Atelier de Vlasschuur". The property was at that time inhabited by Derk Meeles and his wife, with whom Bernard was friends. This work shed had already been purchased by hotelier and art dealer Jan Hamdorff, who had turned it into painters’ studios.
The Vlasschuur had long been visited by domestic and foreign painters such as Max Lieberman, Frans Langenveld, Willem Knip, Anton Mauve and Joseph Israels.
The canvas is housed in a beautiful, heavy gilded frame (65 x 80 cm) and, because of the dark image, presents best in sunlight or with a picture lamp.
This painting comes from a private collection, from the area around Laren.
Pickup is preferred but in the Netherlands it can also be delivered to your home at normal costs. When shipping, it will be properly packaged and insured in transit.
