Description from the seller
Discrete power converted into a legend. Official document and representation of the Mercedes-Benz 500 E —later named the E 500—, introduced in the early 1990s as Stuttgart’s ultimate sports sedan. Behind a sober and elegant exterior hid one of the most singular collaborations in the German industry: its development and partial assembly alongside Porsche AG.
The 500 E was born with a clear mission: to integrate the powerful 5.0-liter V8 from the S-Class into the refined W124 platform. The result was a deep transformation. Its bodywork received widened fenders, broader tracks, and a specific suspension that lowered the overall height. Without losing Mercedes-Benz’s characteristic elegance, the model conveyed contained muscle, recognizable only to expert eyes.
Under the hood, a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 (M119) was installed, capable of developing around 326 hp, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Performance was forceful: sports-car-like acceleration and electronically limited to 250 km/h. However, its character was not explosive but refined, combining brute strength with exemplary stability and composure.
Porsche’s involvement was decisive. Because Mercedes’ production lines were saturated, the assembly of the 500 E was carried out partially at Porsche’s facilities in Zuffenhausen. The process was almost artisanal: the bodies traveled between the two factories in several assembly stages, making each unit the result of an exceptional technical collaboration. Porsche took charge of chassis tuning, mechanical integration, and part of the final assembly, contributing its expertise in high performance.
Between 1991 and 1995, just over 10,000 units were produced, a relatively limited figure that reinforced its exclusivity. In 1994 it adopted the new designation E 500, while preserving its essence intact.
Today, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E / E 500 is considered one of the best sports sedans ever built: discreet, powerful, and technically brilliant. A cult piece that symbolizes the golden age of the great German sedans and a historic collaboration between two Stuttgart giants that forever marked automotive history.
