Description from the seller
Buddhist Terracotta votive lot in Tibetan-Mongolian area – 1 Tsa Tsa and 4 Stupas – Tibet/Mongolia – 19th / early 20th century
Interesting lot consisting of small terracotta votives from the Tibetan-Mongolian area, comprising a central figure identifiable as a Tsa Tsa, accompanied by five votive/ornamental elements.
The Tsa Tsa is a typical Buddhist terracotta votive icon, created by molding and used as a devotional offering or ritual object. The figure represents a deity/Buddha seated in a meditative position, set inside a niche, according to traditional Tibetan iconography.
Among the items in the lot, four conical shapes are the so-called “votive” miniaturized stupas, sacred symbols of Buddhism representing enlightenment and spiritual relics.
The surfaces show a natural patina and signs of manual craftsmanship, with traces of firing and wear that confer authenticity and character.
These objects were widespread in the Tibetan and Mongolian regions, used as offerings in monasteries, placed in sacred niches, or kept as personal talismans.
Provenance: acquired from a gallery specializing in Asian art
Material: terracotta
Technique: mold modeling and firing
Dimensions:
Tsa Tsa (central figure): about 3 cm in height
votive stupas: about 2 cm in height
Conditions: good overall condition, with signs of wear, encrustations, and irregularities consistent with age and artisanal production
Era: 19th – early 20th century
