Description from the seller
Elegant solid wood pedestal/column, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, in Late Victorian style with Neo-Renaissance influences, featuring the characteristic “Barley Twist” spiral carving.
The piece stands out for its slender, well-balanced proportions and high-quality craftsmanship. The circular top, finely molded and slightly raised, provides a stable and elegant surface, ideal for displaying vases, sculptures, busts, or decorative objects.
The central shaft is the key feature: a finely turned structure enhanced by a striking Barley Twist spiral, a traditional decorative element widely used in European furniture from the 17th century onwards and revived during the Victorian period. This detail adds movement, elegance, and strong visual appeal.
The wide, multi-stepped circular base ensures excellent stability while maintaining refined proportions.
Crafted from quality wood, likely walnut or a similar hardwood, it features a warm polished finish that enhances the natural grain. The surface shows a genuine aged patina, developed over time, adding to its antique character and charm.
Dimensions:
* Height: 100 cm
* Top diameter: 23 cm
* Base depth: 30 cm
Condition:
In good overall condition, with age-related wear such as minor surface marks, small imperfections, and signs of use. These do not affect stability or functionality but enhance the authenticity of the piece.
Style and period:
Late Victorian / Neo-Renaissance, late 19th – early 20th century.
Key feature: Barley Twist carving.
Use:
Perfect as a plant stand, sculpture pedestal, or decorative column, suitable for both classic interiors and refined contemporary settings.
