Description from the seller

This work by Julius Köhnholz (1839–1925) is a classic example of his atmospheric, almost longing landscape depictions. Köhnholz was a German landscape painter known mainly for his representations of Italian coastlines and Mediterranean lighting. Here are some aspects that make this painting particularly noteworthy:

1. Light and atmosphere (Luminism)
The central theme is the light. Köhnholz captures the moment shortly before or during sunset.

• The sun sits low on the horizon and creates a radiant path on the water surface.

• The transition from the warm orange and yellow tones on the horizon to the cool, almost deep blue sky in the upper portion showcases his skill in color gradation.

2. The composition
The painting is masterfully balanced:

• Right side: The dark silhouette of the rugged coastline with the palm trees and the hinted classical ruins or villas gives the image depth and an "anchor point".

• Left side: The wide, open sea with the small boat provides a sense of infinity and calm. The boat serves as a compositional figure to emphasize the vast size of nature.

3. Stylistic classification
The painting breathes the spirit of late Romanticism. It is not only about a realistic depiction of a coast (likely Italy, around Capri or Sorrento) but about the creation of a mood (Italian: Stimmungslandschaft). The palms and the architecture evoke in a 19th-century viewer a longing for the sunny south, the “land where the lemons bloom.”

4. Details
• Signature: At the bottom left you can see the typical signature “J. Köhnholz,” often with the addition of his place of residence (e.g., Bremen).

• Condition: In the painting one notices fine craquelure (small cracks in the paint layer), which is completely normal for an oil painting of this age and gives it an authentic character.

In short: It is a very peaceful, almost meditative work that celebrates nature as a place of silence and sublimity.

The frame is included gratis.
