Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral Zoisite. It is used as a gemstone, just like the pink variety Thulite.

As Zoisite crystallizes, Tanzanite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic-to-columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on the surfaces. Cleavage planes tend to shimmer more nacreous.
