Decoration: polychrome hand-painted floral motif
Shape: folded dish with relief rim
Trademark on the back (crown with “Makkum”, BP 24)
Condition
In good condition. Two small rim frits (see detail photos), otherwise intact and without cracks or restoration. Presents itself excellently.
On the back there are clear traces of the prongs (support tips) that were used during the firing process – an authentic feature that belongs to traditionally manufactured earthenware.
About Makkum pottery
Makkum pottery has been produced since the 16th century in the Frisian village of Makkum. It is worldwide known as the Dutch answer to Italian majolica and Delftware. The pieces are still largely handmade and painted according to centuries-old techniques.
What characterizes Makkum are the rich, often colorful decorations and the artisanal character: no two pieces are exactly alike. Because of this combination of tradition, craftsmanship and artistic freedom, Makkum objects are beloved by collectors and enthusiasts of authentic Dutch ceramics.
