The rider wears a high cylindrical shako marked “4”, carries a sabre, and is dressed in a stylised military uniform with simplified decorative detailing.

The figure likely represents a trooper of a 4th cavalry regiment and appears to be derived from contemporary print sources. The costume and attributes reflect late 18th- to early 19th-century European military fashion.

Rather than a specific portrait, the image should be understood as a type representation of a cavalry soldier, a subject frequently depicted on Delft tiles of this period.
