Much more than a simple utilitarian accessory, this object is an emblem of power and high social status, traditionally carried by chiefs or notables during official ceremonies. The carved wooden handle features precious remains of gold gilding, bearing witness to the wealth of the Ashanti Kingdom and the importance of precious metal in their court art.
