Saving Private Ryan (1998) Movie Script (Copy)

Shooting Draft – June 30th, 1997
Complete screenplay with 162 pages
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Written by Robert Rodat

Saving Private Ryan stands as one of the most influential war films in modern cinema, distinguished by its unflinching portrayal of World War II combat and its focus on the human cost of warfare. The film follows a U.S. Army Rangers mission sent behind enemy lines after the Normandy invasion to locate and bring home a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action.

The film is widely recognized for redefining the visual and emotional language of war cinema, particularly through its raw depiction of the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach. Steven Spielberg’s direction emphasizes realism, immediacy and emotional intensity, shifting away from traditional heroic depictions of war toward a more visceral and human perspective.

As a Shooting Script, this document reflects the production-ready screenplay used during filming, capturing the film’s final narrative structure, dialogue and pacing as it transitioned from page to screen. Combined with its cultural and cinematic impact, Saving Private Ryan remains a landmark in war cinema and a defining reference point for realism in filmmaking.

Did you know?

Our scripts come directly from the USA. They are easy to recognize because they have the standard U.S. paper size. Typically, people use A4-sized paper (297mm in height) to make fan copies of scripts. This paper size is not used in the United States; they use letter-sized paper (279mm in height). This is noticeable because this scripts usually have black lines at the top and bottom, showing that the original paper size used to copy (any American script) is smaller than A4.

Also, our scripts have been preserved under the strictest climate control standards in HVAC-R conditions, both during storage and throughout the packaging process. As a result, a label is applied after sealing them, as shown in the photos. They are bound in the same way that vault copies of scripts are preserved, without any oxidizable materials that could damage the paper. They are carefully packed in bubble wrap and placed in a cardboard box to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition.
