The Roman School is defined as a heterogeneous group of painters active in Rome between the 1920s and the 1940s of the twentieth century.

The expression, in French “jeune École de Rome”, was coined by critic George Waldemar in the presentation of the catalog for an exhibition held in 1933 by painters Corrado Cagli, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Emanuele Cavalli and Ezio Sclavi at the Galerie Bonjean in Paris.

Subsequently, critics will embrace this definition by broadening it to include other artists active in the capital in the same period, although belonging to very different styles and artistic aims, such as those of the so-called "Scuola di via Cavour".
