Description from the seller
The Glashütte Tradition Replica 2016 Observation Watch Replica is a reproduction of the classic pilot watches worn by pilots and navigators during World War II. These watches are characterized by their historically inspired design and functional features modeled after the original models. This model comes from stock from 2016.
The name Glashütter Tradition, with its long history, was revived in 1998 by D. Dornblüth with the entry “Glashütter Tradition Dornblüth” in the German Patent and Markenamt. In 2009, the Glashütte Tradition brand was strengthened again through an acquisition, with a focus on single and small-series production. This approach underscored the brand’s commitment to exclusivity and craftsmanship. Despite the renown and recognition that Glashütter Tradition received for its high-quality watches, production was halted at a later date. The cessation of watch production marked the end of a significant chapter in the brand’s history, though its influence on watchmaking and its traditions continues to endure.
A pilot watch, also known as a flieger or B-Uhr, was specifically developed for pilots and navigators to meet their special requirements in military use, particularly during World War II. It is distinguished by several characteristic features that set it apart from conventional wristwatches. Central is the precision of the watch, necessary to enable accurate time measurements during flight navigation. This precision was crucial, as it was indispensable for calculating flight times and positions. Many pilot watches were therefore certified as chronometers, meaning they underwent stringent tests to ensure the highest standards of accuracy. The dial was very clear and high-contrast, usually with a black base color and white numerals or indices. The combination of luminous numerals and luminous hands allowed pilots to read the time easily even in the dark. The distinctive triangle at the 12 o’clock position, replacing the number 12, stood out. This triangle helped the wearer orient the watch quickly by making the top of the dial immediately recognizable. A central seconds hand was another functional element of pilot watches, enabling precise second readings, which played a crucial role in flight navigation. The watch was also built to withstand extreme conditions due to its robust construction.
In summary, pilot watches stand out not only for their technical and functional build but also for their historical significance. They hold a special place in the history of aviation and the military and are today sought after by collectors and watch enthusiasts for their rugged design, precision, and historical value.
