Metoko Mask

An initiatory African mask that is striking, with a form highly developed in three dimensions, unlike the flat plank masks often seen in the East and North of the Congo. It is also distinguished by a remarkable polychromy inlaid in broad bands running across the face.

The rarity of these Metoko initiation masks is due to several factors. First, their creation requires technical and spiritual mastery reserved for initiated sculptors, limiting their production. Next, their use is strictly governed by precise rituals, often linked to secret societies or to ceremonies of fertility, justice, or funerals. Finally, the passage of time and climatic conditions weaken these works, making old and well-preserved specimens exceptional.
