An initiatory African mask that astonishes with its highly developed three-dimensional form, unlike the flat plank masks often seen in the East and North of the Congo. It is also distinguished by a remarkable polychromy inlaid into broad bands that run across the face.

The rarity of these Metoko initiation masks is due to several factors. First, their creation requires technical and spiritual mastery reserved for initiated sculptors, limiting their production. Next, their use is strictly governed by precise rituals, often linked to secret societies or to fertility, justice, or funeral ceremonies.
