Black opals, just like their differently colored counterparts, occur as rounded to knobby masses with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only once these are cut/polished. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which appears in intense rainbow flashes. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals, like other opals, form from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic sheen is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
