Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.
Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.
Peridot is bright green, with a range from yellow-green to olive-green. There are also brownish varieties known. Peridot is sometimes mistaken for emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (cromolith, verdelite).
Already in the Old Testament Peridot is mentioned (as pitdah), and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as the “Evening Emerald” because it can be easily brightened by lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot often belonged to church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was attributed healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
