Description from the seller
Large antique terracotta vessel, probably from the Roman Imperial period (1st–3rd century AD).
The bowl is made of coarse, light-colored terracotta with visible mineral inclusions. The porous surface and the natural patina indicate great age. Inside, clear turning marks from the potter’s wheel are visible, indicating wheel-made construction.
The vessel features a stout outward-flaring rim, a conical wall, and a flat base. Such robust forms are typical for functional everyday vessels.
This piece is particularly interesting and unusual, as it shows certain features of a mortarium (grinding or rubbing bowl of antiquity) but lacks essential typical elements, such as inner abrasive grit and a spout for pouring liquids.
It is known that some very early mortaria from the eastern Mediterranean often lack these features as well. The present form, however, differs and is thus better interpreted as a tub- or basin-like vessel.
Such vessels are very rare, and comparable published examples are scarcely known. According to expert assessment, this object might be more closely connected with a ceramic production or workshop context rather than its customary household use.
It is precisely this unusual form that makes the piece especially interesting for collectors, as it cannot be clearly assigned to the known typological categories.
For comparison with early mortaria, see:
A brief history of the ceramic mortarium in antiquity, Journal of Roman Pottery Studies, Vol. 15, p. 169–214 (Fig. 1–4).
