Description from the seller

Collection of 6 Authentic Hand-Carved Speculaas Boards – Various Figures & Formats – Netherlands/Belgium – early 20th century
For auction: a beautiful and varied collection of six authentic, hand-carved wooden speculaas boards (also known as cookie boards). This collection forms a wonderful overview of the traditional baking culture of the Low Countries and is both a tribute to old craftsmanship and a stylish decorative ensemble.
Collection features:
The set consists of diverse iconic figures, each with its own characteristic details:
Large 'Suitors' and 'Ladies': The collection includes imposing male and female figures (suitor dolls), traditionally given as a symbol of courtship. Note the fine details in the traditional dress and the geometric (diamond/checkerboard) patterns that are typical for this craft.
Various Dimensions: The boards vary in length, with the largest pieces immediately catching the eye as wall decorations.
Material & Condition: Made from high-quality hardwood (likely beech or oak). The boards are in a beautiful, used vintage condition with a lovely patina that emphasizes their age. The incisions are still deep and sharp, a testament to the hand of a skilled carver.
Decorative & Functional Value: While these boards are today highly sought after as rustic wall decor in country kitchens, interiors, or hospitality venues, they are in principle still functional for the enthusiastic home baker who bakes in an authentic manner.
Condition:
In good vintage condition with normal signs of aging that contribute to the authentic character. Please examine the photos carefully for a detailed view of the woodcarving and condition.
Note: These boards have never been stained.
Boards have been treated with a food-safe oil. See photo.
Carefully packed and insured shipping.
