Description from the seller
This wooden chest, spacious—about 80 cm—gives it true physical presence, and on its four faces it unfolds a universe of chinoiserie typical of early 20th-century modernism. It is not a timid decoration: the polychrome scenes look almost theatrical, with figures, pavilions, stylized trees and landscapes that unfold like small visual narratives. The lacquered surface, slightly satin, makes the colors breathe with a soft vividness, as if light were gliding over them in silence.
The reliefs, worked with a patient hand, add volume and rhythm. They are not mere drawings: they rise, curve, and create shadows that enrich the reading of each scene. The metal on the corners and hardware—sober, functional, but with that artisanal air that accompanies period pieces—frames the whole without taking away the foreground from the decoration.
The overall condition is good, solid, with the dignity of an object that has lived but has not lost its character. Only one of the sides shows the need for restoration, something visible but not dramatic, more like an invitation to restore the aesthetic continuity it deserves. Even so, the trunk retains its charm intact: it is decorative, evocative, useful, and with that blend of exoticism and modernity that so enchanted Europe in the first decades of the last century.
It is a piece that does more than store things: it stores atmosphere, history, and an entire imaginary universe.
Shipped with certificate and careful packaging.
