Description from the seller

The Sony TC‑156 is a portable cassette recorder from the 1970s, designed for teaching, schools and field recordings. It is a sturdy, simple device and highly sought after. It is perfect for vintage equipment enthusiasts and for those nostalgic for the 70s-80s.

The Sony TC‑156 is a portable cassette player/recorder (often called a tapecorder at Sony). It was used in:
- schools (languages, dictation, audio laboratories),
- businesses (meetings, interviews),
- journalists and field audio technicians.

It belongs to Sony’s line of compact, 70s-era magnetic recorders, before the hi-fi models of the 80s.

Main features

- Type: mono cassette recorder
- Speed: 4.75 cm/s (standard compact cassette)
- Heads: 1 read/write head + 1 erase head
- Power: mains or batteries (portable device)
- Typical connections:
- microphone input (jack)
- headphone output
- line output / external speaker
- Functions:
- recording
- playback
- LL Balance Teacher / Student
- VU meter
- mechanical counter
- recording level control
- retractable handle

- Very robust: simple, reliable mechanics, easy to repair.
- Vintage 70s sound quality.
- Collectible item for Sony equipment enthusiasts.
- Ideal for digitizing old school or family cassettes

The cassette door latch is broken on the right side but it does not affect the aesthetics or the operation of the unit; I tested it on mains power with the Berlitz-era cassette and it works perfectly well. I don’t have the accessories to test all audio inputs and outputs.

In very good cosmetic condition, the nice extra is the Berlitz English cassette. English 1.
