Description from the seller
Two Historical Grisaille Wooden Panels – Italian School, linked to Pope Paul IV (Gian Pietro Carafa)
Rare 16th-century masterpieces on wood!
These two beautiful cassettone ceiling panels (or parts of painted furniture) are executed in grisaille technique on wood by an artist from the Italian school during the time of Pope Paul IV (Gian Pietro Carafa, 1476-1559, the 223rd pope of the Catholic Church).
• Left panel: The papal coat of arms of Carafa, surrounded by angels. At the top a formidable eagle and rich ornament with foliate motifs and birds.
• Right panel: The noble library of the Carafa family, with the Latin motto “HOC FAC ET VIVES” (“Do this and you shall live”). At the center a winged figure and richly decorated with mythological and heraldic elements.
Style:
• Typical Renaissance/Baroque beginning, with refined wood grain visible beneath the grisaille painting. Very detailed and in beautiful condition for their age.
Dimensions:
• Panel 1: 39.5 × 27 cm
• Panel 2: 39.2 × 26 cm
Provenance:
Directly connected to the pontificate of Gian Pietro Carafa (Pope Paul IV), born in Capriglione Irpina (Campania) and died in Rome in 1559. These panels are a unique historical document from Italian nobility and church history.
Ideal for:
• Collectors of religious and heraldic art
• Museums and historical institutions
• Interior of a library, study, or chapel
• As a statement piece in a classical interior
These panels are rare, authentic and in good condition with authentic patina. A real opportunity for the serious enthusiast!
