Kota reliquaire sculpture from Gabon, carved in wood and clad with brass plaques, with a height of 420 mm, width 140 mm and depth 80 mm, in good condition.

Relief reliquary figure statue of the Kota people of Gabon in wood covered with brass plates
The Kota people live mainly in eastern Gabon and western Congo.
Many Kota reliquary figures exist. They share common characteristics: a face made of metal sheets inlaid on a wooden core and a handle in the shape of a diamond.
The reliquary baskets or "bwété" were kept at the bottom of the chief’s hut. The "bwété" were venerated by offerings and prayers aimed at bringing prosperity to the clan. At the top of the "bwété" a reliquary statue was placed, possessing a body strongly stylized in the shape of a diamond and a head covered with metal.
