Schwarze Opale kommen genau wie seine andersfarbigen Vertreter als kugelige bis knollige Masse ohne erkennbare Kristallstruktur vor. Ihre Schönheit offenbart sich zumeist erst beim Anschliff ebendieser. Charakteristisch für diese Form der Opale ist ihre Opaleszenz, welche sich in intensivem Regenbogenschimmern äußerst. Zudem ist das Grundgestein des Opals hier dunkel, gräulich bis schwarz, was ihm diesen Namen einbrachte.

Schwarze Opale entstehen, genau wie andere Opale auch aus kieselsäurehaltigen Flüssigkeiten, welche in Sedimentiten oder Vulkaniten auskristallisieren. Ihr charakteristischer Schimmer ist auf Wassereinschlüsse im inneren dieses Minerals zurückzuführen.
