Description from the seller

This imposing wooden mask, carved in wood, stylistically depicts the head of a hippopotamus, a symbol of strength and authority among the Bamileke of Cameroon. Used as a ceremonial crest, it was worn on the head during royal ceremonies and the rituals of the secret society Msop, linked to the enthronement of sovereigns and royal funerals.

Its geometric shapes, incised motifs, and dark patina attest to the refinement of Bamileke regal art and the deep spiritual value attributed to these objects, reserved for high-ranking dignitaries.
