Description from the seller

Gabon
Kota
Brass
Kota dagger for decoration.
Height: 450mm
Width: 50mm
Depth: 355mm
Weight: 1290g

Offensive weapons are used to attack and intimidate the opponent. Offensive weapons are divided into several categories: hand weapons, thrown weapons, bows and arrows.

Metal-bladed hand weapons: this type of weapon is, with few exceptions, designed for close combat. Axes, which are mainly used for splitting, ceremonial axes, bird-headed axes and hatchets. Straight or curved knives are multipurpose tools. There are straight or curved daggers, straight or curved swords, short swords, sabers, sickle-like weapons, disc knives, and finally throwing knives.

Thrown weapons, javelins, spears, harpoons and darts allow long-range attacks. Although their primary function is to hit a distant target, these weapons can also have other uses. The javelin is light and usually thrown, the spear, heavier, mainly serves as a thrusting weapon, the spear-dart, significantly shorter than the previous models, is used as a thrusting, striking or dodging weapon. The harpoon always has a fixed or removable barbed point. Derived from hunting weapons, it has found its way onto the battlefield.

The last category consists of bows and arrows, light weapons par excellence used to hit a target at very long distance. Probably designed for hunting, these weapons have found their place in a warrior's equipment. The crossbow existed only among the Fang of Gabon.

It is evident that with the introduction of firearms that allow killing from very far away, all these weapons have become less prized. Nevertheless, the simplest models persisted for a long time as hunting weapons, while the more elaborated ones were kept for prestige, ceremonies and cults.

African Black societies, like all others, had a barter system before the introduction of money, and they designed exchange standards for objects and food. Weapons or blades of weapons were used as a medium of exchange or dowry.

Seller's Story

Passionate about World Arts and more specifically about African Art, we buy from collectors, former officials, military, health workers, public works staff who have worked in Africa and also in Côte d'Ivoire, from antique dealers and traders who roam across West Africa to find quality objects. It is with pride that we present works that, beyond their power to beautify spaces, invite our collectors to resonate with the richness and depth of human expression through the most authentic art. At Arts Ethniques Gallery, we have the privilege of offering our visitors an exclusive selection of artworks, all unique and original.
