Description from the seller
SUSPENDED GAZE
50x70
Acrylic and paper on board
2026
This work arises from the encounter between tradition and contemporary fragmentation. The subject, a geisha portrayed in the foreground, emerges from a deep black background that amplifies her presence, almost suspended outside time. The choice of a realistic setting aims to restitute the intensity of the gaze and the emotional complexity of the figure, beyond its cultural iconography.
The wooden support, tactile and alive, was prepared through a collage of newspaper paper: fragments of daily reality, information, and ephemeral time, which become the base on which the image is built. This underlying layer is not only technical but conceptual: it represents the noise of the present, above which a symbolic, silent, contemplative figure takes shape.
Acrylic painting overlaps the collage, creating a dialogue between surface and depth, between what is seen and what remains hidden. The geisha, traditionally associated with grace, discipline, and mystery, is here reinterpreted as an individual, concrete presence, almost vulnerable, in contrast with the chaotic abstraction of the material background.
The work invites reflection on the relationship between identity and representation, between culture and perception, placing the codified beauty in tension with the stratification of reality.
On the painting I applied a glossy transparent varnish.
The edges are painted, therefore it does not require a frame to be hung.
The work will be shipped with its certificate of authenticity.
SHIPPING ONLY WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION.
Chiara Napolitano was born in 1986 in Carpi. From childhood she showed a natural talent for drawing, she graduated from the A. Venturi Art Institute in Modena and, subsequently, began to make herself known by offering Pop Art reproductions at art and craft markets. Meanwhile, her artistic investigation evolved to define a personal and authentic style.
Women with melancholic gazes, the drips of color, the scraps of paper that ripple, making the scene deliberately imperfect, are all recognizable elements that have contributed over time to defining her identity and artistic sensitivity.
After an initial phase devoted to the female portrait, her path gradually shifted toward the undefined and the surreal.
Her figures lose their features, become hollow, transforming into inner spaces pierced by clouds, symbolic objects, and suspended landscapes. The face is no longer description, but an emotional place. Through essential contrasts and a strong chromatic tension, the artist investigates what remains when identity ceases to be form and becomes perception.
