Description from the seller
Grande Scarabeo Cerimoniale in Alabastro Egiziano (Calcite) – Cultural Heritage and Solar Symbolism
We present a refined specimen of an Egyptian scarab, finely carved in white alabaster (calcite), dating to the late 20th century. (hand-carved natural stone)
This artifact is not merely a decorative object, but a cultured reminder of the millennial tradition of glyptic (hardstone engraving) in Ancient Egypt, where the scarab (Scarabaeus sacer) represented the god Khepri, a symbol of the rising sun and eternal rebirth.
The piece is made from authentic Egyptian alabaster, a translucent calcareous stone highly valued since the pharaonic era for its ability to reflect light, evoking purity and divinity.
The sculpture shows notable technical craftsmanship:
The Back (Exoskeleton):
Features a detailed partitioning of the elytra and prothorax, with linear incisions that define the anatomical structure.
The Base and Legs:
The scarab is depicted resting on an elliptical base. The legs are carved with depth, partially detached from the central body to create a dynamic, visually striking plastic movement.
Hieroglyphic Inscriptions:
Both the back and the base (lower part) are enriched with hieroglyphic inscriptions carved by hand. Although decorative in nature for the production period, they evoke apotropaic formulas and royal names, giving the object an aura of historical authenticity and esoteric charm.
Anthropological Meaning:
Artifacts of this kind, produced between the late 19th and 20th centuries, attest to the persistence of the “Egyptian taste” and the importance of local craftsmanship in preserving traditional iconography. The scarab, as an amulet, was intended to protect the bearer and foster vital renewal.
Technical Characteristics:
Material: White Egyptian alabaster (natural calcite).
Dimensions: 9.6 cm (length) x 6 cm (width) x 5 cm (height).
Weight: 210 grams.
Condition:
Excellent overall condition. The stone displays the natural veining and inclusions typical of alabaster, confirming its natural origin. The surface patina is consistent with the indicated era.
Note for collectors:
Due to its size and stone quality, this scarab makes a striking display piece, perfect for enriching modern Egyptian-related collections or as a high-class decorative element.
The photos are part of the description.
Very well packaged quickly with polystyrene and/or bubble wrap, and shipped with tracking and insurance via top shipping agencies.
The shipping cost includes tracking, packing materials, and insurance for the artwork.
Due to issues with duties and customs procedures, we do not ship to the USA.
Corsica and other non-Italian European islands to be agreed.
