The King Seiko Chronometer represents the absolute pinnacle of Daini Seikosha's manufacturing prowess during the golden age of Japanese mechanical watchmaking. Born from the fierce internal rivalry with Grand Seiko, this timepiece showcases the strict "Grammar of Design" principles established by Taro Tanaka, characterized by flat surfaces and razor-sharp angles that catch the light brilliantly. Earning the prestigious officially certified chronometer text on the dial, this particular reference 5626-7040 houses a sophisticated hi-beat movement, blending exceptional mechanical precision with timeless, razor-sharp aesthetics. It remains a highly coveted piece for serious collectors of vintage Seiko.

Brand: Seiko
Model: King Seiko Chronometer
Reference Number: 5626-7040
Serial Number: 270694
Movement: Automatic Caliber 5626
Dial: Silver sunburst dial with applied black-striped indices, exceptionally clean and well-preserved condition
Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Date: July 1972
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with sharp case geometry and a remarkably pristine dial

Dial and Hands
The dial is a masterclass in mid-century Japanese design, featuring a brilliant silver sunburst finish that remains exceptionally vibrant and clean. The typography is crisp and perfectly preserved, proudly displaying "SEIKO CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" below the twelve o'clock position and the applied KS logo above the six. The applied, faceted rectangular hour markers are highly polished and feature precise black center stripes that perfectly match the sharp dauphine hands, enhancing legibility. A sharply framed day-date aperture sits at the three o'clock position, featuring a highly desirable Kanji and English day wheel. Upon close inspection, the dial shows an outstanding level of preservation, free from any notable moisture marks, spotting, or surface degradation, presenting a truly stunning vintage appearance.

Case and Crystal
The 37mm stainless steel case exemplifies the renowned King Seiko design language with its robust presence and sharp architectural lines. The lug profile remains impressively sharp, showcasing clear, defined transitions between the brushed upper surfaces and the highly polished case flanks. Honest, light superficial handling marks are visible, consistent with careful vintage wear, but the case retains its structural integrity without any signs of heavy over-polishing. The original, deeply embossed KS-signed crown sits flush against the case. The solid screw-down caseback is in excellent condition, with all factory engravings, including the reference number, serial number, and "KS CHRONOMETER" text, remaining deep and highly legible. The crystal is clean and clear, offering an unobstructed view of the magnificent dial beneath.

Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5626, a highly regarded automatic hi-beat movement engineered for chronometer-grade accuracy. The movement is performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. The timegrapher results indicate a performance of +35 to +40 seconds per day.

Strap
The watch is fitted with a handsome black leather strap featuring contrasting white stitching. The strap pairs perfectly with the monochromatic aesthetic of the dial and the sharp metallic tones of the stainless steel case.

Condition
This King Seiko is presented in excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved, standing out as a prime example of Daini Seikosha's enduring quality. The case retains its bold, factory-intended geometry with only light, age-appropriate wear.

Dimensions
The case measures 37 mm in diameter excluding the crown.

Remarks
Finding a King Seiko Chronometer with such a pristine dial and sharp case lines is becoming increasingly difficult. This reference 5626-7040 is a superb expression of Seiko's dedication to high-frequency accuracy and superior case finishing, making it a cornerstone piece for any dedicated vintage watch collection.

History
Introduced in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the King Seiko line was Daini Seikosha's answer to the Suwa factory's Grand Seiko. The addition of the "Chronometer" designation elevated the King Seiko to the absolute highest echelons of horology, signifying that the movement had passed rigorous internal testing standards meant to rival the Swiss chronometer certification. These pieces are celebrated today not only for their historical significance in the legendary Seiko factory rivalry but also for their enduring design and mechanical excellence.
