Description from the seller
Ivory Coast
Baoulé
Wood
Height: 220mm
Width: 220mm
Length: 475mm
Baoulé African stool from Ivory Coast. Very beautiful geometric shapes. Very interesting stool in the shape of a stylized turtle, the handle represents the animal's head, the feet represent the paws and the seat represents the turtle's body.
The Baoulé are one of the most important ethnic groups in Ivory Coast. Their name reflects their origin: according to a legend, Queen Aba Pokou led her people in an exodus toward the gold regions in the 18th century; she had to sacrifice her son to the river god in order to be able to cross it. The people were thereafter called the "Bauli", which means: "the son is dead".
Baoulé artists produced many art objects and are still very active today. Thanks to their sense of stylization and their attention to detail, they created works that are among the most elegant African objects. The Baoulé created masks, statues, figurines, fetishes, combs, chairs, loom-winding pulleys, canes, spear-throwers, slings, ointment boxes, oracle boxes, divination boxes, carved doors, beaded necklaces, as well as gold and bronze jewelry worn during major ceremonies.
