Their beauty usually reveals itself only after polishing of this material. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which appears in an intense rainbow play of color. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name.
Black opals, like other opals, form from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions within the mineral.
