Very impressive antique Islamic Ottoman silver ring. Raised bezel with a layered 'Eye'agate cabochon intaglio, set in a gilded border and finely decorated shoulders. -> Eye agate is valued in many cultures for its spiritual and protective properties. The stone features concentric bands resembling an eye. The gemstone shows an orange-red domed layer (imitating the lens of the eye) on a white concentric band. -> The term 'Eye' agate emphasises the gemstone's significance as a protective talisman, believed to ward off evil, provide clarity, and promote spiritual well-being. Outside diameter: ± 21,2 mm Inside diameter: ± 18,5 x 18,7 mm Diameter bezel: ± 25 mm Weight: ± 21,41 g Condition: good solid condition, wearable. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. This intaglio belongs to the tradition of Suleimani Aqeeq, a banded agate much admired in the Ottoman and broader Near Eastern world. Examples with eye-like natural banding were particularly favoured as protective beads, thought to deflect the evil eye, while aqeeq in general was worn as an auspicious and valued stone in Islamic personal adornment.
