Oil on canvas, depicting flowers in a vase signed Germaine Chardon (1910-1999) (daughter of Paul Gauguin)
Germaine Chardon (1910-1999) was a painter and sculptor of Belgian origin, recognized for her scenes of African life and European coastal landscapes. She often claimed to be the daughter of the famous French painter Paul Gauguin.
Biography and Formation
Origins: Born Germaine Huais in Brussels in 1891 (although art records often indicate 1909 or 1910). She would be the illegitimate daughter of Paul Gauguin and Juliette Huais
Studies: She trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels with Frans Smeers, a master of Belgian Impressionism.
Trips: In the late 1950s, she settled in Africa, a stay that would leave a lasting mark on her work.
End of life: She spent her final days in France, in Nyons, before passing away at Le Cannet on March 21, 1999.
Style and Themes
Her work is distinguished by a vibrant use of color and light, whether in oil, pastel, or watercolor.
Africa: Her works capture daily life, such as her portraits of children or canvases depicting potters in Rwanda.
