Ancient Roman bronze votive statue of the god Mercury, holding caduceus in his left hand, and a money bag full of money in his extended right hand. On his head he is wearing a petasos (a winged hat). These symbols denote his role as a messenger and guide. The statue is fully complete with all attributes and the bronze stand is indicating it was most likely used in a home altar. -> Votive statues were typically offered in temples or shrines as expressions of devotion, gratitude, or requests for favour from the deity. Mercury is the messenger of the gods, especially of Jupiter, and is associated with commerce, travel, and communication. He was also considered a guide for souls to the underworld.
