Malachite, also known as copper spat, as well as emerald-green or copper-green, is a mineral from the carbonate and nitrate class with the chemical composition Cu2[(OH)2|CO3][4]. Chemically, it is therefore a basic copper carbonate.
Malachite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, yet only rarely forms crystals visible to the naked eye with a needle-like to prismatic habit. It is usually found in massive or botryoidal, banded aggregates in pure green color in all variations from pale to dark green.
Already Pliny the Elder (23/24–79) described malachite in his Naturalis Historia. The name, via the Latin molochitis, probably derives from the Greek word μαλάχη, in Classical Greek pronounced maláchē for “mallow.” The color of the stone is said to resemble the vibrant green of leaves.
Since ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, and the Roman Empire, the mineral has been exceedingly popular. The Egyptians carved various artworks from malachite, such as amulets and scarabs, and processed the finely ground mineral into expressive eyeshadow. That malachite, contrary to earlier assumptions, was not the source of the green color in wall paintings in ancient Egyptian tombs, seems very likely according to newer research.
