Description from the seller
Excellence Bauhaus: Set of 4 Cesca Chairs by Marcel Breuer – Gavina Production (Late 1960s)
We present at auction an exceptional set of four Cesca chairs, an absolute masterpiece of 20th-century design. Designed by Marcel Breuer in 1928, these seats represent the perfect synthesis between the rationalist Bauhaus aesthetics and the innovation of the cantilever structure. Gavina production from the 1960s is today the most sought after by collectors for superior execution fidelity compared to later industrial versions.
Details of Authenticity and Rarity
The originality of this set is confirmed by unique constructive details typical of vintage manufacturing:
- Traces of Hand Weaving: A element of extreme historical value is the presence, on the bottom of the wooden frames, of original traces of hand weaving. These residues attest to the artisanal technique of origin, prior to the diffusion of pre-woven straw panels, ensuring the piece’s historicity.
- Original Labels: Under the seats there are still three original Gavina adhesive labels, further documentary proof of provenance and production period.
- End Caps of the Tubulars: The ends of the steel structure are fully closed and not capped with plastic or steel inserts, a distinctive technical detail that separates Gavina productions from copies or economy editions.
Lot Conditions: Professional Conservative Restoration
The set has undergone a restoration cared for in meticulous detail, aimed at preserving its vintage soul while ensuring maximum functionality:
- Frame: The chromed steel tube is solid and robust. After professional cleaning and polishing, the chrome has regained its brightness, showing only slight shading consistent with age.
- Wooden Frames: The beech frames lacquered black have been restored and are in excellent cosmetic and structural condition.
- Vienna Straw: To ensure maximum resistance, the Vienna straw of the seats has been completely replaced and that of the backs is in perfect condition.
Final State: The chairs are in excellent condition, ready to be placed in a prestigious setting.
Dimensions
Height: 78 cm
Width: 46 cm
Depth: 55 cm
The Designer: Marcel Breuer (1902-1981)
Pioneer of the Bauhaus, Breuer transformed the steel tube — inspired by the handlebars of his Adler bicycle — into a domestic language. The Cesca (dedicated to his daughter Francesca) is considered one of the ten most important design objects of the last century.
The Manufacturer: Gavina
Under the leadership of Dino Gavina and the presidency of Carlo Scarpa, Gavina redefined design production standards in the 1960s. Each Gavina piece is an investment that combines industrial rigor with high-level artisanal finish.
Shipping and Insurance:
Our company ORVETT includes transport insurance in the stated shipping costs. For overseas shipping the cost is indicative. We will formulate a quote after the auction closes depending on the destination.
