Aquamarine is the blue variety of the silicate mineral beryl and thus crystallizes, like beryl, in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition Be3Al2[Si6O18].

Its blue color is due to trace impurities of iron(II) and iron(III) ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) on different lattice positions. As an allochromatic (foreign-colored) mineral, the streak color of aquamarine remains white. The color after the gemstone’s name is a vivid blue-green, but pale blue to dark blue beryls are also referred to as aquamarine.

Due to its high Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 and often well-formed, clear crystals, aquamarine is mainly used for jewelry stones.
