Description from the seller
Coffret Chizu (the map) - Kikuji Kawada
Maquette édition
Mack, 2021
Excellent état, le coffret et les 3 livres sont en état parfait
Le carton de protection à quelques marques visibles (voir photo)
The Map / Chizu by Kikuji Kawada is the best known and most sought-after book in the history of Japanese photography. Created according to a design developed with the famous graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, Chizu has seen several new editions since its original publication in 1965 (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, Tokyo). In November 2001, the New York Public Library acquired the book’s rarest version, the one-of-a-kind maquette hand-made by Kikuji Kawada.
Chizu / The Map is an exploration of the consequences and repercussions of World War II in Japan, more specifically through the catastrophe of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
This Mack reissue (2021) is a facsimile of that two-volume maquette, and it includes a bilingual English / Japanese booklet offering a study of the project by Joshua Chuang and Miyuki Hinton, as well as a long interview with the artist, detailing the evolution of one of the greatest photography books ever made.
Contents: two hardcover books, each with a dust jacket (one illustrated with a photograph, the other plain white), plus a softcover booklet (black) consisting of a section bound in Swiss binding and a section in Leporello. The set is housed in a rigid slipcase, itself protected in a white printed carton. Texts in English and Japanese"
