Original oil painting on panel, Paysage, a French urban landscape in the impressionist style, hand-signed, from École européenne (XX), 39 × 54 cm, framed, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Oil on panel – Late 19th / early 20th century – Unidentified artist ( illegible signature )
Beautiful oil on panel of a lively urban landscape depicting the medieval architecture of the French town of Annecy. Here the old prison surrounded by the Le Thiou canal is placed at the center.
The technique, the chromatic palette and the construction of the scene place this painting between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century; the presence of earthy pigments typical of the academic palette of the late 19th century.
Of good quality, the mastery of architectural volumes, the use of atmospheric perspective and the handling of light testify to a high-quality production, probably by a painter trained in a European school.
The signature, located at the bottom, is present but illegible, and no documentary research has allowed identifying the artist or the title of the work.
The overall condition is good. Natural age crackling visible, consistent with the age.
Varnish slightly yellowed.
But no major structural damage visible on the front nor any sign of mechanical reproduction or restoration.
Representative example of urban topographic landscape painting, reflecting the interest in historical architecture in the Romantic/Realist era, even early Impressionism.
