Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Like the pink variety thulite, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.

As zoisite, tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on their surfaces. The cleavage surfaces, by contrast, tend to have a pearly sheen.
