Description from the seller
Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, one of the great feasts of the Orthodox Church and also very important in Eastern Catholic tradition.
In ecclesiastical Slavonic the title appears:
«ПРЕОБРАЖЕНИЕ ГОСПОДНЕ»
("Preobrazhenie Gospodne") = The Transfiguration of the Lord.
Icon elements
In the center stands Christ glorified, surrounded by golden rays that symbolize the divine and uncreated light.
On both sides, above the clouds:
the prophet Moses (with the Tablets of the Law),
and the prophet Elijah.
Below are the three apostles present in the episode:
Peter, John and James, depicted fallen or covering their faces before the divine vision.
Spiritual meaning
The scene comes from the Gospel (Matthew 17, Mark 9 and Luke 9). Christ momentarily reveals His divine nature to the disciples. The light symbolizes:
the glory of God,
the divinity of Christ,
and the spiritual transformation of the human being.
From the shape of the tablet, the inscription and the technique, it seems to be a Russian or Ukrainian icon of Orthodox tradition, probably from the 19th century. The golden background and the composition are typical of popular religious workshops of the Russian Empire.
