Etruscan bronze situla handle, dating to the 8th–6th century B.C., of broad arched form with ribbed terminal knop and a width of 26.6 cm, in very good condition and acquired from a Swiss private collection in the 1980s–2000s before entering a European private collection and later being acquired in 2020 in the United Kingdom.
Description from the seller
Etruscan Bronze Situla Handle, 8th–6th Century B.C.
A substantial cast bronze handle from a situla (bucket), of broad arched form with opposing hooked terminals. Each terminal is finished with a stylized ribbed knop, a characteristic decorative feature seen on Italic bronze vessels. The handle displays a gently flattened section along the lower arc, consistent with prolonged use and suspension.
The form and construction correspond to known Etruscan and Central Italian situla fittings, where such handles were attached to the vessel rim and engaged with side loops or lugs. These vessels were used in both domestic and ritual contexts, often associated with elite banqueting and funerary assemblages.
The surface shows a stable green patina with areas of encrustation, consistent with archaeological burial conditions.
Intact and structurally sound; surface wear, pitting, and mineral deposits throughout. No modern repairs.
Width: 26.6 cm.
Provenance: Swiss private collection, 1980s-2000s. Later in a european private collection.
