Poupée Namji du Nigéria. Pièce contemporaine. Livrée sur socle.

Dowayo et Namji sont un seul peuple.
Dowayo est la contraction de deux mots Doyo (humain, homme) et Woyo (enfant, neveu). Wa-Yo se traduit par fils et fille.
Toutes ces combinations permettent de traduire Dowayo par enfant de l'homme ou être humain, ou fils de l'homme.

Le nom de Namji / Namchi viendrait du Peul et signifie " nous avons arrêté de broyer, de moudre".
Le nom Namchi englobe aussi d'autre petites ethnies comme les Koma, Bata, Papé...

On distingue deux types de poupées :

    les poupées jouet, sans ornement, portées dans le dos de petites filles à l'aide d'une ficelle. Il s'agit d'un simple jouet.
    les poupées de fécondité, réservées aux femmes, qui sont richement parées.
    La poupée représente l'enfant que tout un chacun souhaite avoir, tout en étant une "poupée fétiche des femmes" qui doit leur assurer la fécondité.
    Elle a donc le pouvoir de combler la femme en lui apportant une naissance.
