Description from the seller
Amazing work of sacred art created by the painter Carmelo Elenus, an artist active in the twentieth century and known for his ability to infuse a deep mysticism into his creations. The painting depicts the profile of Christ’s face, captured in a moment of intense suffering and contemplation during the Passion.
The work masterfully exploits the wooden support: the author chose to leave the wood visible as background, using its natural grains to create a material depth and a warmth that the canvas could not deliver. Christ’s face emerges from darkness thanks to decisive brushstrokes charged with color, with strokes of light (white lead) that define the details of the beard and the hair wet with sweat and blood.
The wounds on the face are rendered with austere realism, while the robe, edged in gold and blue, recalls the subject’s royalty despite the pain. Elenus’s style sits in a modern figurative lineage, where the expressiveness of the stroke prevails over mere decoration.
