Description from the seller
Beautiful Russian Orthodox travel icon / triptych with Mother of God depiction and blue enamel – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass travel icon in triptych form, richly decorated with blue enamel and refined religious depictions in relief. This type of foldable icon was used in the 19th century as a personal devotion object and portable altar for prayer during travel or pilgrimage.
Description
The central panel shows a traditional depiction of the Mother of God with the Christ Child, rendered according to the Orthodox iconographic tradition. Both figures are equipped with a halo and surrounded by Church Slavonic inscriptions. The frame is decorated with geometric patterns and filled with bright blue enamel, creating a strong visual contrast with the warm brass surface.
The side panels contain several small religious scenes and depictions of saints in fine relief. Above the central panel there are additional decorative and symbolic elements, including angel and saint heads and a small religious scene in the top crown.
The combination of detailed cast work and colorful enamel is typical of Russian Orthodox travel icons from the 19th century. These objects were produced in specialized workshops and were cherished by believers as protective icons and personal prayer objects.
The icon has a beautiful old patina and the enamel shows slight wear and minor irregularities appropriate to its age.
